Letter from your Council Chair, Erin Nydam

Happy Holidays Kingsley Families:

What a fantastic first semester!  I want to thank each and every one of you for making Kingsley a great place for our kids to go to school.  We have had phenomenal results with our fundraising and each event has seen a record number of attendees.  With all of that activity comes lots of volunteer hours.  Please make sure that you take some time over the winter break to log in your first semester hours.  So far, we have 15 families who have met the charter challenge of 32 service hour and we have another 23 families who have met their 16 hour minimum.  That is outstanding Kingsley, but don’t stop logging those hours because we have to report ALL of our hours to the state to fulfill our Charter requirements.

And now let’s take a sneak peak at what we have coming up in the New Year.

January   February   March
Students return on the 4th

We have a fantastic Parent Meeting planned for January 24th.  Our Curriculum Action Team is putting together some great information for us about challenging our gifted students so be on the lookout for more information about that meeting.

The end of January will bring our Honors Programs on the 25th and 26th.

Jump Rope for Heart and Donuts with Dad on the 3rd.  We are looking for a parent coordinator to help Coach with Jump Rope for Heart so if you are interested in helping with this event please contact me.

We moved candlelight Luncheon to February 16th to let our students share a special Valentine luncheon with a parent or special someone.

We will have the return of Walking Wednesdays on the 7th with Georgia Walk to School Day

Those are just a few of the events that will start our 2nd semester, but please enjoy this winter break with your family.  We have all been working hard this 1st semester and deserve the R&R.

Happy Holidays,

Erin Nydam
Charter Council Chair

Show our affection and how proud you are - they will love it!

Every year, we create an amazing yearbook for our students, and this year's is going to be terrific! One of the coolest parts that the kids LOVE is the section containing personal messages from their parents, otherwise known as the Public Displays of Affection (PDAs). PDAs are a great way to tell your kids how proud you are of them and congratulate them on their accomplishments. PDAs are available in various sizes with the smallest beginning at 1/8 of a page for $15. To place your order, send an email to Allegra Johnson at ajwigwam@bellsouth.net containing your PDA message with the picture you'd like to include.

A big thank you from the 1st Grade Girl Scout Troop

Thank you Kingsley for supporting our efforts! With you help and generosity, we collected more than 70 coats for the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Kids.

We have a 4th grade play!

Title:  “A Kid’s Life” by John Jacobson & Mac Huff
Day/ Date:  Friday, February 24, 2012
Time:  TBA
Place:  Dunwoody High School Auditorium

How can you be involved?  How can you share this great experience with your child?  How can you get volunteer hours early in the semester?

We will need A WHOLE LOT OF help your producing "A Kid's Life" this year's 4th Grade Play.

We need a whole Creative & Production Team (Stage Manager, Dance Captain, Technical Director, Set Manager,  Stage Crew, House Manager, Publicity Manager) and would love to work with Next Year's Producer/ Director. This is a great opportunity for 3rd Grade parents who are interested in producing and/or directing next year's 4th Grade Play.  You could shadow this year's team to make sure you know what is needed, what to do again and what to avoid to make next year even easier.

Please let me know if you would like to help and what job you would like to do ASAP!  Contact Debbie D'Arcy at toddarcy@bellsouth.net.

2011 Annual Holiday Toy Drive

Toys will be picked up every Friday from November 11th until December 9th. Toys will be distributed on December 17, 2011. Thank you very much for your generosity.

K-Kids Raises Money for Malachi's Storehouse

K-Kids, a service club for 4th and 5th graders, is challenging all Kingsley classes to donate to the Money for Malachi's Storehouse contest! Malachi's Storehouse is an organization that serves families in need in our local Dunwoody area, and this is the 3rd year that we have supported them. Last year they used money that Kingsley raised to provide toys to the children whose families received food from Malachi's Storehouse for the holidays. Visit the Kingsley website to view the Malachi Tracking Wall.

A Note from Your Carpool Crew

Parents, everyday we have more and more late arrivals in carpool.  Arriving at 7:50am in line is not on time!!  We, the parent carpool volunteers, would like to remind you that if you are not in line by 7:45am we cannot guarantee your child will get in on time.  The door will close at 7:50am even if there are cars in line. This is a school rule, please do not blame us for abiding by the rules.

Thank you for arriving early and being aware for the safety of our children.

Election Day Bake Sale a BIG Success - THANK YOU Kingsley parents and staff!!

Thanks to all those who provided baked goods and tableware - we have some talented bakers!  We had a great presentation, great response from the voters, and enough to sell until 6pm!  Best of all, we exceeded our goal and made $850!!!  That should be enough to build our first retaining wall back by the gym, and plans are already underway for that.  If you want to help with this effort, please contact us at kcsgardenclub@yahoo.com.

If you provided items for the bake sale, please check the Parent HQ for any items you want to retrieve (baskets, platters, containers, etc.).  It should all be on the couch.  Don't forget to log your hours in K12 too!  Log 0.5 hour if you donated store-bought items, 1.0 hour for donating homemade items and the actual hours worked at table shifts.

Thanks again to all who helped with the 2011 Bake Sale!!!

Candy for Troops
The students at Kingsley are hoping to bring a little cheer to troops serving in Afghanistan by sending them candy-filled care packages. This year, Kingsley is partnering with Troops 360 to provide the troops with sweet treats.

If you end up with too much Halloween candy, why not think about sharing the treats with the soldiers overseas. Troop 360, is a local nonprofit that will send Candy Solution care packages to over 4,500 Army soldiers.

Families who would like to donate candy or other items for the Candy Solution care packages can bring their donations to a drop off box that will be located in the front office. The deadline to bring your treats is November 4.
sszknight@hotmail.com to sign up for available days. Thank you.

Your Fall Festival Checklist

Only 1 day left until Fall Festival! The students are psyched about their class booths and all the fun-filled activities, and everyone is finishing the final preparations.

Is your family ready?

To help your family get ready, here’s a quick checklist:

·         The weather is going to be perfect conditions for Fall Festival. Right now, the forecast is showing that it will be a little cool during setup (40s), but should warm up nicely to the low 60s during the event. To have a perfect day, dress in layers. Make sure to bring a bag to keep up with your family’s jackets as they ditch the layers.
·         Did you preorder your tickets? If so, don’t give it another thought. Just plan to pick up your tickets at the Will Call table under the big top. If not, no worries. We’ll have tickets for sale at the event (3 for $1).
·         Be a safe parker! We all love that Kingsley is tucked away in a neighborhood, but that means that we all need to be good neighbors to the residents who live near the school. Click here to download parking map.

o   Remember, this is a school event. That means that lots of kids of ALL ages will be coming, so the streets and school areas will have lots of pedestrians.
o   Pack your camera! Please take lots of pictures of your class booth and your favorite activities. If you get any great ones, please email them to Allegra Johnson at ajwigwam@bellsouth.net so she can make sure Fall Festival is represented in this year’s yearbook.
o   Please park on only ONE side of the street—simply follow the lead of previous families who’ve parked. Since the streets are narrow, parking on both sides of the street prevents emergency vehicles from getting through and makes it very dangerous. We need to make sure everyone stays safe!
o   Please do not block driveways or mailboxes! Last year, a resident’s driveway got blocked and their moving van was not able to get into the driveway. As a result, they lost more than $500 in fees. You never know what a resident has planned during Fall Festival.
o   Only use parking spaces in the teacher parking lot (where carpool is run).  Only park on the curb if you are unloading supplies or dropping off family members. This will ensure emergency vehicles can reach the field in the event an attendee needs medical attention.

TWO DAYS AND COUNTING UNTIL FALL FESTIVAL!
Get ready for a Rockin’ Time!
Two days to go until Fall Festival and everything has really come together.

One thing we haven’t mentioned is the Food Court. Our 5th Grade parents have arranged for some great food!

They will be serving BBQ from Pig N Chik, pizza from Marco’s and hot dogs right off the grill. Hold off the sugar at breakfast because they are going to have a home-cooked baked goods for sale too. Finally, one of everyone’s favorites will be on site—Rita’s Italian Ice.

IMPORTANT: The Food Court will be cash only. Some communications mentioned that tickets would be accepted, but we will not be able to do that. It is too difficult to keep track of two payment methods with volunteers. Thank you for understanding.

THIS WEEK AT KINGSLEY

Opportunity to Get Your Child’s Artwork in Unique Ways
Make sure to check your student’s Courier envelope for information about the Square 1 Art sale. This sale not only provides additional funds for Ms. Agee’s art program at Kingsley, but it also offers some great ways to enjoy your child’s artwork or give as gifts.  Each student has one piece of artwork that can be reprinted in on numerous products—your student should have stickers that show their piece of artwork.  Orders are due back to the school by October 28, and purchased art products will arrive the week before Thanksgiving.  Click here to download the Square 1 Art Sales flyer.

Box Tops and Campbell Soup Labels!

Keep sending in those Box Tops and soup labels for our October collection! Currently, the first grade is in the LEAD for collecting the most items by class! Keep clipping those tops and labels and send them into school during October! Your students class could win the big treasure box full of pencils, erasers, candy, toys and other treats!
