Extra Edition: DCSD Accreditation Status; Campus Cleanup Day 1/27

URGENT ACTION: Dekalb County School District Accreditation
Dunwoody Chamblee Parents' Council (DCPC)

Now that the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) has been downgraded to the accreditation level of “Probation” by SACS/AdvancED, the District is only one step away from losing its accreditation.  See the report produced by SACS/AdvancED at:  http://dekalbschoolwatch.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/spec-review-report-for-dekalb-county-final-copy.pdf

On January 17, at 1:00 p.m., the Georgia State Board of Education will meet to determine if they should recommend to Governor Deal that he suspend the members of the DeKalb County Board of Education.

Under the new state law, the State Board can make an immediate recommendation to the governor for possible action or give the DeKalb BOE time to make improvements.

1.  Give Your Input to the State BOE and Governor Deal before Jan 17th.

Give concise feedback with what you would like the outcome to be.  The options are:

·         Maintain the status quo, and allow the current DeKalb BOE more time to correct the items SACS has cited
·         Replace the entire DeKalb BOE with an interim board appointed by the Governor.
·         Reappoint certain BOE members. (Governor Deal can choose to reappoint members)
·         Require specific skills of BOE members, I.e. must be able to read financial statements and be able to approve expenses listed in the annual budget?

Send in an actual letter (best) or email the State BOE and Governor Deal:

·         Governor Deal Mailing Address:  206 Washington St./Suite 203/State Capitol/ Atlanta, GA 30334
·         State Board of Education: 205 Jesse Hill Dr. S.E./Suite 2054 East/Atlanta, GA 30334

2. ATTEND the hearing on January 17 at 1:00 p.m. Your presence is important.

The hearing will be held in the State BOE Boardroom at:

Georgia Department of Education
2070 Twin Towers East,
205 Jesse Hill Jr Drive
Atlanta GA 30334
(A picture ID is required and $5 for parking)

Thank you in advance for your input to the State BOE and Governor Deal.

Respectfully,

Kingsley Campus Cleanup Day
Sunday, January 27, 2-  4pm
Leaf cleanup will be our main focus.  Bring gloves, rakes, tarps, blowers, and a wheel barrow if you can. This task used to be handled primarily by our custodial staff but recent budget cuts have left schools short on custodians. We know we can count on our parents to help keep our campus safe and looking great!
