News from DeKalb County School District.  On December 17, members of the DeKalb County Board of Education, along with the Superintendent and Senior Team, met with AdvancED and Dr. Mark Elgart, President and CEO of AdvancED. During this meeting, Dr. Elgart reviewed the Special Review Team Report from the October 17-19, 2012 visit. As a result, the District is now being placed on Accredited-Probation until December 31, 2013. The District has received this information and will work collaboratively to review the findings and begin to address the required actions. The District still remains fully accredited and students’ academic status remains unchanged.

Message from the principal; Statement from DCSD

This email contains two items related to last Friday's event in Connecticut.

Message from the Principal

Kingsley Parents,

My heart remains heavy as the details surrounding the school shooting in Connecticut continue to unfold. This weekend, I hugged my children a little tighter as I thought of the twenty parents who are having to deal with the unfathomable loss of their children. I want to let you know that we will not be discussing the school shooting that took place on Friday with our student body. I firmly believe that each family must make the decision as to whether or not discussion of such a violent, horrific act is right for their household.

I also want you to know that in light of Friday's tragedy, the Admin. Team in conjunction with our Safe School Committee has already begun a review of our Safe School Plan, and will provide our entire Faculty and Staff with any necessary updates. As a part of our Safe School Plan, we have already had a successful Lockdown Drill earlier this semester, with plans to have another in the near future.

Please join me in continuing to keep the families in Newtown, Ct.  in your thoughts and prayers.

If you have any immediate questions or concerns, please contact us at (678) 874-8902.

Sincerely,

Jasmine Smith

Statement from DeKalb County School District via K12 Alerts

We join the nation in grief and mourn the loss of so many innocent lives. In light of the tragedy in Connecticut, the DeKalb County School District has asked all school administrators and staff to review their safe school and emergency plans. School resource officers and campus supervisors will continue to be highly visible at their assigned schools to provide maximum security for staff and students. We will continue to communicate with the different police departments in the district to provide support as needed. The safety of students, staff and visitors is our top priority in the DeKalb County School District, and we are dedicated to ensuring that our public schools remain the safest places for our most precious resources - our children.

Chick-fil-a Spirit Night is tonight!  More info

McDonald's Spirit Night (Jett Ferry and Mt. Vernon Rds.) is Monday, November 12 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Pizza BINGO is Tuesday, November 13.  Reserve your pizza here.

The Grandparents' Luncheon is Thursday, November 15.  Sign up and more info here.

The Curriculum Action Team meets on Thursday, November 15 at 5:00 pm in the Media Center.

Dress Down Day is Friday, November 16.

Scholastic Book Fair Starts November 12

Book Fair hours are 7:20 am - 3:00 pm except Wednesday when the hours are only before and after school. Students are allowed to shop before school if accompanied by a parent as the fair is open all day for them to shop.

If you do not plan on coming to the Book Fair with your child but you would like them to be able to buy books, please send your child to school with money in a secure envelope. Do not send in more than you intend for the child to spend. There is no way for the Book Fair volunteers to know what the spending limit is per child. If the child comes in with a certain amount of money, we have to assume it is OK for them to spend it all.

There will be a grade level contest. The grade that purchases the most books wins a Dress Down Day. There will also be a costume contest. With each purchase,  a shopper  receives one ballot to vote for Dr. Smith or Mrs. Seabrook to wear a sports costume for one day.

Parents are welcome to stop by the fair and buy a  gift certificates for specific teachers. Just remember the last shopping day is Thursday, November 15 so you want to buy gift certificates early to give the teachers time to shop before we pack up the fair.

Box Tops Collection Update
Every last Box Top and Campbell Soup label has been sorted and counted for Kingsley! And the winning class who collected the most items this month is ... Mrs. K's Kindergarten class!! This group of families did an AWESOME job sending in thousands of clippings; beating the closest class by 550 items! The big treasure box of goodies for the whole class to share will be delivered next week.

Some families went above and beyond collecting items for our school so far this school year - here are our MVP's for this months collection campaign: The Sims family (Markey & Dougherty); The Nelson family (Henard); The Marks family (Lips); The Johnson family (Kundmueller) and The Crowder family. These families made a serious effort to trim, keep and send in thousands of Box Tops and Campbell Soup labels and we appreciate you SO MUCH

Kingsley Charter School will be receiving a check from Box Tops for over $850 this December! That's equivalent to 4 successful Spirit Nights! Great Job Kingsley!

The Clorox Power a Bright Future grant voting has been delayed and now begins Monday, November 12 and goes through December 19. Be sure to register on the web site and vote daily once via the web and once via text.  That's two votes per day per person!
